American Hand Therapy Foundation … Happy 35th Anniversary!!
The American Hand Therapy Foundation (AHTF) was established 35 years ago by a few visionary American Society of Hand Therapists members who desired to promote a higher level of clinical knowledge in the relatively new field of hand and upper extremity therapy, provide world-class content for its new Journal of Hand Therapy, and meet the challenges of subsistence in a cost-controlled healthcare environment.
At the Annual ASHT Meeting in San Antonio, TX, September 12, 1987, Donna Breger Stanton was told by the Research Committee that, regrettably, the then still relatively new ASHT organization would review and encourage but could not provide funding for therapist research. With no avenue for “therapist-funded” research and most hand therapists having relatively little research experience, Donna knew there would be limited opportunities for hand therapists to fund their research ideas!
Judith Bell-Krotoski urged Donna to suggest to the ASHT Research Committee that they consider establishing a “Hand Foundation that would provide therapist seed grants to encourage therapist research.”
With the assistance of legal counsel, who recommended the Foundation’s current structure as a separate tax-exempt entity from ASHT, the documents to finalize the formulation of the American Hand Therapy Foundation as a tax-exempt organization in the State of Indiana were signed in December 1989.
The visionary hand therapy leaders who founded AHTF understood that “proof” would be needed to improve and distinguish exceptional treatment. Clinical research would provide a pathway for the ultimate survival and success of the practice of hand therapy.
Since its inception, AHTF has made a significant impact, funding over $100,000 in grants, management, and education. AHTF is a truly unique organization dedicated exclusively to advancing the practice of hand therapy by funding research and education. Our mission is to fund clinical and scientific research and education to advance the practice of hand therapy and the quality of patient care worldwide. This is a testament to the collective efforts of our members and supporters.
We are very proud of our Foundation and are thrilled to celebrate our 35th anniversary and many more to come! We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our board members, donors, volunteers, and supporters who have been instrumental in our journey.
